PhuongChi Nguyen

PhuongChi Nguyen recently joined Boat People SOS as the Director of Program Development and Administration. PhuongChi started her professional career as a classroom teacher, moved on to being the State and Federal Bilingual / Migrant Programs Supervisor at Washington State’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and finished her career in the Pacific Northwest as the Court Education Professional with the Washington State Administrative Office of the Courts.

An educator at heart and with a soul of a wanderer, PhuongChi was born in one but raised in two cultures, lived in four and traveled to 22 other countries, commanding three languages, taught in the United States and abroad. PhuongChi’s experiences with diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic populations lay the foundation for her unique insights on the intersection between language/culture and social/economic/political voice and power.

PhuongChi is passionate about and dedicated to building the Vietnamese-American communities’ capacity to bridge diverse generations and ethnic cultures, empower youth, nurture engaged U.S. citizens with proud and strong dual identity. She either supports or is the co-founder of such organizations as Vietnamese Community Leadership Institute, Viet Language and Cultural Studies, Tet in Seattle, Vietnamese Community of Seattle and Vicinity, and Vietnamese Heritage Language and Cultural Schools Coalition.

PhuongChi received her Bachelor of Arts in French at the University of Washington, her Masters in Education at the Seattle Pacific University and Masters in Public Administration at the University of Washington’s Dan Evans School of Public Affairs.

In her spare time, PhuongChi enjoys taking her 18 nieces and nephews on outings, singing, reading, exploring the U.S. with her fiancée, Ron Magdaleno.
